“You mean photos, yeah?” Yes, I do - “fotki” is a slang russian word for “photo,” and Fotki.com is another great photo sharing website. In the free membership, you get 10Mb for your photos. “Hmm, 10Mb, 10mb - that’s not that much. I can show you whole bunch of CD’s with my photos! I have Gigabytes of them!” That’s fine, but there is still a way out - you may share only your best of the best. 10 Mb - that’s around 100 jpg photos in the reasonable size for web sharing. One hundred! In all honesty, if you have more than 100 good photos, then you are already a well-know photographer and can afford 30$/year for the Premium membership. Know what? They claim that you will get “unlimited storage space for your photos” then! I’m really curious what the Fotki staff will do if someone takes this literally.

I uploaded a few photos in the album called Street Band. They were taken in the last day of 2003 on the Carl’s Bridge in Prague. The uploading was almost a breeze. At first, I’ve got excited with the “Ftp Upload” link. “Wait, wait, naive boy, FTP is for Premium members only! Oh, sorry…nevermind then.” I picked up that “Active X” thing instead, it loaded a nice uploader to my browser window first, and then I could just select all the files from my PC and transfer them to Fotki album at once. All the features you would expect are there - you can put a title and description to your photos and albums, rearrange everything, allow comments for your photos, and they will also do the stats of how many visitors saw your albums. There is also an option to protect your pictures with a password, but I beg you to not use it - we really want to see your photos! :-)

There are many other features at Fotki, but that’s something I would leave for your own discovery. They are running photo contests as well, but only Premium members can participate. That’s the only unpleasantness I came across so far. So, by all means, show us your FOTKI!
